Membership Criteria

In order to qualify as a member of ASBA, a candidate brewery (“Candidate”) must be an “Alberta Small Brewer”.

Based in Alberta

  • The Head Office (“mind and management”) of the Candidate must be located in Alberta.

Brewed in Alberta

  • At least ninety percent of a Candidate’s average annual beer sales in Alberta (averaged over the most recent five years) must have been brewed in Alberta from the date production begins in Alberta.
  • “Brewed” is defined as the production of beer (ales and lagers) though steeping a starch source to produce wort sugars, which are then boiled and fermented.

Independent + Small

  • Independent means no more than 25% of a Candidate company is controlled by an alcoholic beverage industry member which is not itself an Alberta Small Brewer.
  • Small means the Candidate’s annual global production does not exceed 700,000 hectolitres.

Exceptions

Contract Brewers

  • A Contract Brewer shall not be eligible for membership.
  • Contract Brewer: A business that hires another brewery to produce its beer. It can also be a brewery that hires another brewery to produce additional beer. The contract brewing company handles marketing, sales, and distribution of its beer, while generally leaving the brewing and packaging to its producer-brewery

Brewpubs

  • A Brewpub shall be eligible for membership if it meets all of the criteria noted above.
  • Brewpub: A restaurant-brewery that sells 25% or more of its beer on site. The beer is brewed primarily for sale in the restaurant and bar. The beer is often dispensed directly from the brewery’s
