CALGARY, June 11, 2018 – Alberta Small Brewers Association

In light of the recently disclosed decision of the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) panel in regard to the trade challenge levied against the Government of Alberta, the Alberta Small Brewers Association (ASBA) supports the Government of Alberta’s intention and ongoing efforts to make brewing a signature industry for the province. The number of breweries operating in Alberta has increased more than five-fold in the five years since ASBA was established. The programs and policies of the Government and the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission have played an important role in that growth.

Continued growth of existing and new Alberta breweries means good Alberta-based jobs using Alberta barley to produce fresh and interesting products for local consumers.  It also brings new opportunities to attract tourists to neighbourhoods and communities throughout the province.

When asked what the implications of the AIT decision will have on ASBA and its members, Neil Herbst, Chairman of ASBA, responded, “We are confident that future actions by the Government of Alberta will be taken with our industry and with the continued growth and development of the local industry in mind. The Government clearly wants to see this industry grow and we look forward to partnering with them to ensure that continues to happen.”
